Preparing flamed salmon on the fire bowl - a culinary experience with the "Eccentric" designer stainless steel fire bowl
The preparation of flamed salmon is not only a culinary tradition, but also a unique experience that stimulates the senses and combines enjoyment with nature. Originally native to the Scandinavian countries, this special type of preparation has established itself worldwide. In this method, the salmon is fixed on a wooden board and cooked over an open fire - a technique that not only tenderizes the fish but also refines it with a smoky aroma. However, the success of this preparation depends not only on the recipe, but also on the choice of the right equipment. In this context, we recommend the "Eccentric" designer stainless steel fire bowl and the matching flame-grilling boards.
Flamed salmon - a culinary slowdown
Flambéed salmon is far more than just a dish. It is a ritual that takes time and turns preparation into a conscious experience. Unlike conventional grilling, which requires quick cooking times and constant turning, the preparation of flamed salmon allows for slow cooking, where the salmon is cooked in peace over an open fire. This slow method helps to ensure that the fish remains particularly succulent and that the aroma of the wood and the fire is optimally absorbed into the meat.
The importance of flaming salmon boards
At Stahlkunst Edelstahl Manufaktur, we offer flaming salmon boards made of high-quality wood as well as stainless steel - both variants have their own advantages and disadvantages, which we would like to explain to you in more detail.
Flame-grilled salmon planks made of wood offer a traditional look and the natural feel that many barbecue fans appreciate. Wood is a natural conductor of heat, which gives the salmon a certain flavor, as it absorbs the aroma of the fire particularly well. In addition, wooden flame-grilled salmon planks are cheaper and give the experience a rustic charm. One possible disadvantage, however, is their reduced durability: wood can crack or discolor with frequent use. Cleaning can also be more time-consuming, as wood is more susceptible to odors and moisture. The wood therefore needs to be replaced at some point - we also offer suitable replacement boards for this.
Stainless steel flame-grilling boards, on the other hand, are particularly durable and hard-wearing. They are heat-resistant, corrosion-resistant, remain rust-free and are easy to clean (can be put in the dishwasher) - ideal for frequent use. Stainless steel also ensures even heat distribution, which supports a precise cooking method. A possible disadvantage could be the lack of natural wood look and flavor of the wood, which many prefer for outdoor cooking - the wooden flame-grilling boards give the flame-grilled salmon a rustic "wood flavor", while the stainless steel flame-grilling boards do not impart any flavor, as stainless steel is completely flavorless. The price of stainless steel flame-grilled salmon boards is also higher - but they can be used for years without having to be replaced.
Ultimately, choosing the right flammable salmon board depends on your personal preferences and requirements - both wood and stainless steel offer great properties for preparing flammable salmon. However, flammable salmon boards made of wood are traditional and more widely used.
Instructions for preparing flamed salmon on the "Eccentric" fire bowl
Here we show you simple instructions on how to prepare flamed salmon using the fire bowl and flamed salmon boards.
What you need:
- 1 salmon fillet (approx. 1 kg), with skin
- 2 flame-grilling boards (made of wood or stainless steel)
- For the marinade:
- 2-3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1-2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon chopped fresh herbs (e.g. dill, thyme)
Step 1: Prepare and marinate the salmon
- Prepare the salmon fillet: Remove any bones from the salmon fillet and cut it into suitable portions that fit well on the flaming salmon boards. Leave the skin of the salmon intact, as this holds the salmon meat together.
- Prepare the marinade: Mix the brown sugar, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper and chopped herbs in a bowl. Stir the marinade well until the brown sugar is completely dissolved and a uniform consistency is achieved.
- Marinate: Rub the salmon fillet generously with the marinade so that the fish is completely covered. Make sure that the marinade is also absorbed into the skin and flesh. Cover the marinated fillet, place in the fridge and leave to rest for at least 30 minutes to 2 hours so that the salmon can absorb the flavors.
Step 2: Mount the salmon on the flaming salmon boards
- Fastening: Take the marinated salmon fillet and attach it securely to the flaming salmon boards. The skin side of the salmon should be facing downwards - the tip of the tail should also be facing downwards. The salmon fillet cooks from the thicker side (i.e. the tip of the tail) to the thinner side, which promotes even cooking. This prevents the thinner head area from cooking too quickly and becoming dry.
Step 3: Positioning the flame-retardant boards
-
Light the fire: Light the fire bowl and wait until the flames have died down a little - it is important that flames are still flickering in any case.
-
Positioning on the fire bowl: Make sure that the flaming salmon boards hang at an angle of around 15-30 degrees. This slight incline helps the liquid to drain from the fish during cooking and keeps the meat juicy. In addition, the entire salmon fillet is cooked evenly - if the incline is too steep, there is a risk of uneven cooking.
Step 4: Cooking flamed salmon
- Cook: Allow the salmon to cook slowly. The cooking process takes around 30 to 50 minutes, depending on the thickness of the salmon. The salmon should develop a golden brown, caramelized crust on the outside, while still remaining juicy on the inside.
Step 5: Check and serve the salmon
- Check the degree of doneness: The flamed salmon is ready when the meat can be easily separated with a fork and a nice golden brown crust has formed on the top. The fish should still be tender and juicy on the inside.
- Remove from the fire: As soon as the salmon has reached the desired level of doneness, carefully remove the flaming salmon boards from the fire bowl and allow the salmon to cool briefly before serving. We can recommend our Stahlkunst stainless steel outdoor tongs as a tool to safely remove the flamed salmon planks from the fire bowl.
Conclusion: A great campfire experience for family & friends
A unique culinary experience that appeals to all the senses - the smell of the fire, the crackling sound of the embers and the gentle heat that surrounds the salmon on all sides create an atmosphere that is both relaxing and exciting at the same time. The slow cooking of the salmon over an open fire is reminiscent of Scandinavian traditions and brings a piece of Nordic flair right into your own garden - making the preparation of flaming salmon with a fire bowl one of the highlights that we definitely recommend and that you should do if you have a fire bowl at home. It's a great experience all year round, both in summer and winter, and also a great reason to invite friends and family over and spend some quality time around the campfire. Give it a try!
