Fire bowl without smoke - how does it work?

Not everyone can enjoy a firewood campfire at home - some people live in residential areas where lighting a fire is not welcome due to the smoke. Also, the idyllic campfire is not for everyone - some are bothered by the smell of smoke that clings to their clothes, and some would like to enjoy a fire on the covered terrace - where it is not possible to light a fire with firewood due to the roof.

There is a solution to all these problems. Because there are other ways to enjoy a fire - without any smoke or firewood. What we are talking about is the fuel type ethanol. Some people know ethanol from so-called ethanol fireplaces, which are used indoors. Ethanol fireplaces are very popular here, as no extractor hood is required - because ethanol burns without smoke, soot or odor. In this way, it is possible for everyone at home to celebrate the fire experience indoors too.

We at Stahlkunst Manufaktur have adapted this approach to our fire bowls. This is because ethanol can be used both indoors and outdoors - the ethanol flame is strong enough to light a beautiful fire and also provide soothing warmth. For our fire bowls, we have developed the Stahlkunst ethanol combustion chamber made of stainless steel, which can be inserted into any Stahlkunst fire bowl and then operated with smoke- and soot-free bioethanol - without the annoying smoke from the firewood bonfire, but with a beautiful flame ambience and pleasant heat development. The Stahlkunst ethanol combustion chamber has an excellent filling capacity of 10 liters, so that when completely filled, a fantastic fire is created that is similar to that of a firewood bonfire. This means that all Stahlkunst fire bowls can also be used with the ethanol combustion chamber on covered terraces or other areas where a firewood bonfire cannot be lit. This means you can also bring the ambience of fire into the conservatory or similar. The size of the flame can be varied depending on the filling - with a few liters of filling, the fire is rather small and decorative, while using the full filling quantity of 10 liters results in a larger and warming fire. Completely without smoke, soot or flying sparks - and can therefore be used in closed or covered areas as well as outdoors.

We have written down common questions and our answers on how to use the ethanol combustion chamber. Because not everyone has experience with the operation of bioethanol, so questions automatically arise.

  1. How is ethanol ignited? Igniting ethanol is very simple. You fill the combustion chamber with ethanol and then simply ignite the ethanol with a short jet of flame. At the beginning, the fire is very small and develops within the next 15 minutes, so that the fire becomes steadily larger and warmer.
  2. How can I extinguish the fire? Do I have to let the ethanol burn out completely? The ethanol does not have to be burned out completely. The ethanol combustion chamber comes with a matching stainless steel lid, which you can use to extinguish the fire within seconds. All you have to do is place the lid on the combustion chamber and the fire is extinguished.
  3. How long does the combustion chamber burn? If you fill the combustion chamber completely, it will burn for over 10 hours.
  4. Does the bioethanol fire really warm? A very clear yes. Our ethanol combustion chamber really warms up when you sit around it. The room is also warmed in closed areas such as the conservatory.
  5. Which bioethanol can I use? You can use the high-quality Stahlkunst bioethanol. However, other bioethanol from DIY stores can also be used.
  6. Do I have to pay attention to anything when inserting the combustion chamber? No. The combustion chamber is placed in the fire bowl, filled with ethanol and can then be ignited. If you no longer wish to light a fire, you can extinguish the fire with the lid. The next time you want to use firewood, all you have to do is remove the combustion chamber and stow it away.
